| General Khanduri comes from a distinguished
family of Garhwal. His father, the late Jai Ballabh Khanduri, was a journalist
renowned for his principled way of life. The late Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna,
who was one of the favourite sons of Garhwal and had during an illustrious
career been the Chief Minister of UP and a Union Minister, was his uncle.
Born in Dehradun, General Khanduri
has done his B.Sc., B.E. and M.I.E. from the Allahabad University and the
College of Military Engineering, Pune. He has also done a number of advanced
courses.
As a student, he also participated
in the freedom struggle.
He joined the Corps of Engineers
of the Indian Army in 1954 and retired in 1990. During this period, he
commanded a regiment during the Indo-Pak war of 1971; was Commander of
an Engineering Brigade; was Chief Engineer; Additional Military Secretary,
Army Headquarters; and the Additional Director General at Army Headquarters.
He was conferred the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 1982 by the President.
He joined the BJP after retirement
and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1991. He also held senior party posts
during this period.
On being re-elected to the Lok Sabha
in 1998, he was made Chief Whip of the BJP in the Lok Sabha. He played
an active role in a number of the Parliament's committees.
He began his third term in the Lok
Sabha in 1999 and continued to perform his parliamentary duties with energy
and commitment. He became a member of the BJP National Executive in 1999.
General Khanduri is married to Mrs.
Aruna Khanduri (nee Shakuntala Nailwal) and they have a son and a daughter.
The General retains an interest in
social and cultural activities as patron of a number of organisations,
and is particularly interested in environmental, defence, social and cultural
issues.
He is an avid sportsman and has played
tennis, squash, hockey and football.
He has visited a number of foreign
countries including Austria, France, Germany, Holland, U.K. and U.S.A. |
