He has done his BSc. and has been
an avid student of spiritual subjects, politics, astrology, philosophy,
social sciences, psychology, physics, geology, mathematics and chemistry.
He has also been a Battalion Senior Under-Officer in the NCC. He has won
state level prizes in football, hockey and other sports. He has also been
active in dramatics and writing.
He has trekked in many parts of
the Himalayas and is well versed with the conditions in the hills. He has
travelled widely in India.
He became associated with the Jan
Sangh in 1962. He joined the RSS in '64 and has been a Sangh Pracharak.
He has participated in the Gauraksha and the Hindi movements. He was also
involved in the movement for setting up of the Garhwal University.
He has organised many seminars under the banner of the Vivekanand Vichar
Kendra.
He married Munni Devi of Village
Kandei, District Pauri.
He went on to participate in the
JP movement.
He was elected to the UP Assembly
for the first time in 1996 on the BJP ticket from the Pauri constituency.
He has also been the Vice-President of the Uttaranchal BJP.
Mr. Gaonwasi has been an enthusiastic
participant in many movements and has been jailed a record number of 37
times. He was in the forefront of the agitation for a separate state. He
also suffered incarceration during the Emergency.
A science graduate, he has been a
member of many associations like the Chattra Parishad, Yuva Morcha, Vivekanand
Vichar Kendra etc.
By virtue of being a journalist he
has been a regular contributor to Hindi, English and Garhwali dailies and
periodicals. He was the Chief Editor of Yogbhumi for a number of years.
