92 kms. from Dehradun and 73 kms. from Mussoorie at 2118 metres rests Chakrata,
once a contonment town in British India. One look at Chakrata and it becomes
clear that this place is blessed to be the eternal home of natural beauty.
Virgin forests of conifers, rhododendrons and oaks are
best suited for long walks. By these forests, picturesque villages of the
Jaunsari tribe exist alongside, and in the shadow of the overpowering Kharamba
peak (3048 meters) Chakrata has its share of Alpine beauty, too. On its
northern slopes is situated Mundoli (2776 meters), where skiing is possible
between November and April. Those who are not Indians would be wise to
check up on the latest regulations on entry in this area from the civil
authorities or the tourism department.
EXCURSIONS
Deoband (2776 meters), Kanasar (2621
meters), Molta (2159 meters), Tiger Falls are worth visiting. The temple
of Mahasu Deota at Hanol is very popular amongst the pilgrims of Garhwal
and Himachal Pradesh.
