The Trail
...
Nanda Devi Sanctuary situated in the Garhwal
Himalayas of eastern region in Chamoli District at the
height of 4,500 metres is surrounded by senventy
white clossal peaks, many named and unnamed,
the most famous being Nanda Devi. The Sanctuary is in the form of a cup,
with lush green meadows and gushing milky water falls and herds of the
blue mountain goat (Bharal).
Thus
this area has attracted many prominent international moun- taineers. Sir
Edmund Hillary in his autobiography has mentioned the ruggedness of this
sanctuary.
"Nanda
Devi Sanctuary is God gifted wilderness
India's
training ground for adventure ........."
The starting point for this trek is Joshimath. At Joshimath arra- ngements
for guide, porters and last minute purchases can be made. Joshimath to
Lata is 25 km journey by road and then the trek starts from Lata village.
From Lata, it is an arduous trek to Lata Kharak but one forgets the exhausion
on seeing the fabulous and fantastic view of the snow glistened peaks of
Runti, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti and Bethartoli across the river Rishi Ganga.
...
Lata Kharak is an open, broad grassy ridge which is covered with flowers
in the summer time. It is always windy and chilly. Form here, fine views
of the northern face of Bethartoli Himal and the Trisul Massif extending
to the south can be seen. To Dharansi, it is a long uphill trek across
the Dharansi Pass (4253 M). When approaching the Pass one gets the first
glimpse of Dunagiri (7068 M) and immediately after crossing it, Nanda Devi
(7818 M) can be seen. From Dharansi the path trails its way across the
Malatuni Pass (7238 M) where the western face of Hanuman (6076 M) can be
viewed, and then descends almost 750 metres through grass and snow
slopes, dense forests to a mountain stream.
After crossing the stream one finally; arrives in the hospitable meadows
of Diblru Ghet, which is ideal place for
Camping in the forests near the river , in summer, Debru
Gheta is covered with fritillaries steeply at first,
then it is on long treaversse across several mountain ridges before one
crosses a bridge over the Rishi Ganga and arrives in Deodi. From Deodi,
it is an 6 km. trek through juniper and rhododendron forests to Ramni .
As one trek towards Tilchuni, Nanda Devi is coming ever closer.
