| Garhwal
has been described as "the most beautiful land in the
mountains of the Asian sub - continent" by Dr. T. Longstaff,
world renowned mountaineer, naturalist and trekker. Apart from
the four holy shrines of the Hindus- Kedarnath, Badrinath,
Yamunotri and Gangotri, Garhwal has much more to offer. The fresh virginity
of the unspoiled natural beauty is Garhwal. |

Trekking has its own delights and dangers.
It is very often confused with mountaineering.
Whilst mountaineering is a preplanned affair, trekking does not require
as much preparation. Mountaineering is more technical
in nature and can be hazardous but this is not so in the case of trekking.
Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), a Govt. undertaking
has ventured to make trekking a round the year delight.
It has divided its treks in two parts viz. Summers (April to Oct.
- trekking upto 4.628 M) and Winters (Nov. to
March - trekking upto 2.500). From time immemorial, the hill folk and pilgrims
trekked across the hills, due to lack of roads and transport, on this difficult
terrain.

The great Guru Adi-Shankaracharya
trekked in the Garhwal Himalayas in the eighth century A.D.
and he was the first religious pioneer, who opened up
the trekking routes in this part of the country.
Trekking should always be organised
in groups. On some of the trekking routes,
accommodation is not available. On
such routes, alpine tents are available on hire or one can use the temporary
huts of nomadic Gujars. |

While on a trek the following
tips are most essential :

Since the weather in the hills is most
uncertain, a raincoat is an absolute must.
