| Garhwal is an ancient land that
has many layers of history, culture, ethnicity and religion reaching far
back into pre-history, and co-existent in present times. Naturally, the
lifestyle of its people reflects this rich diversity. The fact that the
ancient kingdoms existed in the remote mountain fastnesses allowed a great
measure of autonomy to its people. It was also a sanctuary for those seeking
to flee the ever turbulent plains of North and Central India. This has
meant that the Garhwali has held his liberty very dear and has accepted
change only voluntarily. |

So the land is the bastion of tradition,
soldiery and the home of spiritual learning. It is where some of Hinduism’s
most holy shrines exist and where Hindus perform the mandatory pilgrimage
to Badrinath, which opens the path to Moksh or liberation from the cycle
of births and deaths.
